Sarah Boxall
BSc (Hons.), ARCM[PG], PhD CPA, EPA, ETMA, EDA
Sarah is experienced in all aspects of UK, European, US, PCT and foreign patent prosecution, as well as managing large intellectual property portfolios. This experience includes advising and prosecuting UK and foreign designs, UK, Community and US trade marks and copyright. Whilst working in these areas, Sarah’s responsibilities have included formalities, prosecution, opposition, infringement, searching, appeal, validity, licensing and assignments. Technical areas of work have been chemistry, mechanics, medical apparatus and all aspects of biology.
However, Sarah’s passion is providing strategic advice to clients and seeing companies grow and succeed through their IP portfolio. She is well versed with fund raising and due diligence, having assisted both her clients and venture capital firms to raise many millions of pounds. Sarah is also a committed teacher and examiner of trainee patent attorneys and is regularly found on the speaker list for IP conferences.
Peter Draggett
PhD, CPA, EPAPeter has over 30 years experience in the patent profession, including training in the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer goods sectors at Beecham, 14 years in software licensing, chemicals, polymers, materials and engineering with ICI, 7 years in healthcare and medical devices at Smith & Nephew, before spending 4 years in private practice with a wide range of subject matter.
Peter is experienced in all aspects of UK, European, US, PCT and foreign patent prosecution, as well as giving strategic commercial advice on IP due diligence (freedom to operate, patent validity), product development and intellectual property portfolio management up to CEO level. This experience also includes patent drafting, prosecution, opposition, and defence.
Peter also has 20 years of experience in in- and out-licensing, acquisitions and disposals, commercial partnering and pre-competitive collaboration deals, including drafting and settling the relevant agreements.
Since entering private practice, Peter has sought to bring the same type of strategic advice, mainly to start-ups and growing SME's, and to assist them in finding funding / investment.
Peter graduated from Bristol University with an Honours degree in chemistry before obtaining a chemistry PhD, also from Bristol. He has been a speaker at IP conferences.
Gillian Herrod-Hempsall
BSc, CPA, EPA
Gillian graduated from Bristol University in 1972 with an honours degree in Microbiology. After starting in private practice she then worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 7 years, where she qualified in 1976. She then moved back into private practice where she has been ever since.
She has had wide experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications worldwide in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields, including representing clients at Opposition and Appeal hearings before the European Patent Office.
She has also had experience in providing in-house maternity cover for other private and industrial practices.
Gillian is now a Consultant for London IP Ltd.
Derek Jackson
MSc, BSc Tech, CPA, EPA, ETMA
Derek joined the IP profession in 1973 and trained in London with one of the country’s larger firms of patent attorneys. After qualifying he moved into industry and set up and ran a patent department for a manufacturing group. After some years Derek returned to private practice and then set up his own practice in 1990.
Derek has represented clients of all sizes before both the UK Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office and has considerable experience of securing protection for clients around the world. Derek’s background as a chemical engineer has allowed him to work in a wide range of technical fields including mechanical, electro-mechanical and computer-related inventions in addition to chemical processes.
For many years Derek has been involved in the training and education of prospective patent attorneys and has a commitment to maintaining high standards within the profession.
Timothy Locke
BSC, MSc, PhD, CPA, EPA
Dr Tim Locke has over 40 years experience in the profession and is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. His academic background is chemistry and he worked for 30 years with ICI and 7 years with Zeneca and Avecia before acting on a freelance basis. He has broad professional experience in chemistry from heavy industrial chemistry to biochemistry and electronic components and in mechanical and physics and radioisotopes work. His experience is mainly in original drafting and prosecution of patent applications, infringement advice and patent oppositions.
Keith Mansell
MA(Oxon), CPA, EPA
Keith entered the patent profession in 1965, working as a patents assistant at the Wellcome Foundation. After qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney he subsequently became the Senior Patents Officer for the UK Atomic Energy Authority, specializing in materials and electrochemistry, until 1989. Keith moved to Exxon Chemicals (latterly Infineum), where he worked as Patent Counsel and Patent Portfolio Manager until 2003.
Keith has considerable experience in drafting, prosecution, validity and infringement opinions, oral proceedings at the EPO, licensing and agreements, and portfolio management. He has also contributed greatly to the patent profession, having acted as tutor and examiner for the UK, European and Singapore qualifying examinations.
David Warrilow
MSc(Chem), MSc(IP), CPA, EPA, ETMA
David joined the profession in 2001, and worked with major firms of patent and trademark attorneys in London until 2009, before joining London IP to become a co-ordinating attorney.
David has advised and represented a diverse range of clients, from lone inventors to a variety of multinationals (including several household names) in all aspects of intellectual property. His practice includes patents, trademarks, copyright and designs, and although his technical background is in chemistry, he has gained extensive experience of patenting mechanical inventions.
His experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications varies from drug-delivery systems to thermal transfer technology, vehicle parts, games, chemical synthesis & analysis equipment and methods, paper coatings, medical devices, building equipment, product packaging, construction methods, various novel home furnishings, ball-bearing races, to name but a few.
He has co-ordinated international trademark filing for a number of very well known companies, and represented numerous applicants before the UK and European trademark authorities at all stages from filing through to opposition.
David graduated from Birmingham University with a Masters degree in chemistry before obtaining a further Masters degree in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary University, London.
